Apple developing a media center rival?

Posted in Desktops, Laptops, Software by T Evans on the April 28th, 2006

With Apple’s general method of publicly denying the demand for a product until they announce its imminent release, Steve Jobs’ words at today’s annual shareholder meeting were quite telling. Without giving much away, Jobs stated: “The new products in the pipeline are the best I’ve ever seen in my life.” But in response to a particular shareholder’s request for Apple to develop “the ultimate media center” to give Microsoft’s WMCE a run for its money, Jobs responded: “we hear you loud and clear.” Quite the strong words from such a secretive man, though he was on a bit of a roll. In regards to the recent 17-inch MacBook Pro’s release, Jobs let everyone know, “Everyone wants a MacBook Pro because they are so bitchin’.” Thanks for that, Steve. Jobs also mentioned the possible demise of the CRT in their lineup, due to environmental concerns and their general lack of bitchin-ness.

Sony to try and defeat the ipod (again)

Posted in Portable Audio by T Evans on the April 28th, 2006

Sony senior vice president Takao Yuhara met with reporters yesterday to announce that the company is working on a new digital audio player, software and download service to take on Apple’s iPod. Yuhara didn’t provide a whole lot of details, though he did say the player would be “typically Sony,” by which we assume he meant it would be hobbled by intrusive DRM, poor support for formats other than ATRAC and prices that will make it completely uncompetitive in a market where you can get a decent 512MB flash player for well under $100. Let’s hope we don’t end up with this year’s answer to the Bean.

Rumors are currently circulating that Motorola is planing to cash in on the Razr phenomenon with another thin phone - the Capri. The Capri is going to be a slider that should be similar size as the Slvr. Other sketchy details include quad band support, a camera and TransFlash memory expansion. Kent over at the CNET Alpha blog is speculating that this phone may resemble the Motorola MS600 (pictured above) which is only available in Korea currently.

No more Animals from Orange

Posted in Mobile by T Evans on the April 28th, 2006

Orange UK is preparing to ditch its much derided “animals” campaign in favour of a generic branding campaign. The Animals campaign, costing around US$18 million was due to run to the end of this year, and was based around classifying customers as a type of animal when selecting their monthly tariffs. Orange said that it had uncovered four distinctive new groups with common personality and taste traits – the fun loving Dolphins, no-nonsense Racoons, sociable Canaries and the no-expense-spared Panthers.

Casio EX-Z1000 10 Megapixel Digital Camera

Posted in Cameras by T Evans on the April 26th, 2006

Casio just gave a bump to the top-end of their Exilim Zoom line-up by introducing the 10.1 megapixel EX-Z1000. The Z1000 features the same anti-shake DSP and meager 3x zoom we saw in Casio’s 8.1 megapixel Z850, but doubles the pixels count on the LCD to 230k. They also double the ISO sensitivity to a massive ISO 3200. All of this and the device still remains only 22.4mm thick. Casio kindly haven’t released any information on when or how much it will cost to get one of these in your hands though.
