Acer Ferrari 5000 & 1000

So you want a Ferrari but you don’t have the money. Why not settle for the next best thing? A Ferrari laptop! Here’s what E had to say, It hasn’t been long since we saw AMD pop up with their own dual core mobile processor, the AMD Turion 64 X2, and the first round of products are already beginning to appear. Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Acer’s Ferrari 5000 and 1000, the former a 15.4-inch carbon fiber desktop replacement, outfitted with a 1.3 megapixel camera, 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, gigabit Ethernet, and a dual-layer slot loading DVD±RW drive — or, eventually an HD DVD drive (what, no Blu-ray?); the latter is a 12.1-inch widescreen machine that weighs in at 3.7 pounds. We’re not clear yet on price, availability, or what it’ll look like up in the face, but we are definitely interested to see how this machine will stack up against the slew of Core Duos already on the market.
Undiluted Platinum – PSP Modchip

Well here are official photos of the first PSP Mod chip which is supposedly going to make homebrew much easier. It is supposed to be a complete flash / firmware replacement solution. But there were a lot of unanswered questions when we first found out about it a few days ago, but thanks to MaxConsole, we’ve got some answers. The 32MB flash storage area is booted to by default when installed in your PSP (shown above — default PSP firmware can be accessed by holding L1 when booting), and can be written and modified freely with its own USB connector, which is routed through the battery compartment, making it completely enclosed, isolated, and independent. So much so, in fact, you can supposedly restore a bricked PSP with this thing. Expect a $90 US MSRP.
Samsung bans their own phone from HQ

Here’s a funny little bit of news. The new Samsung SCH-B570, with its 8 GB hard drive, has been very well received, but it has been banned in a very unexpected place Samsung headquarters.”8GB storage capacity is more than enough to steal all confidential data about our company,” said Ki-Tae Lee, CEO of Samsung Electronics’ Telecommunications Network during the Wireless Broadband Forum in Seoul. Now the question remains, what happens once ALL phones start having 8GB storage? No mobiles in a mobile shop.
iDea Wireless iPod/PSP Dock

This is a unique dock that looks like a poor man’s Sonos sans the DRM problems. This dock connects to almost any audio device, including the iPod and PSP, and transmits the audio to any other matching receiver or wireless headset around the house.
Each dock has S-Video, composite, and S-Video out and a clever little stand with some sort of pumpkin on it. It can output video from the iPod Video and Photo. The dock comes with a remote and one Hi-Fi Receiver and costs roughly £80.
New eMacs TBA?

Apple Insider’s has said that they have received word that a brand new version of the infamous eMac will be coming out soon (September it seems). The image above is a simple mock by engadget, however it has been said that the final design will look similar to the iMac. It has been also said that the screen will now be an LCD rather than CRT and it seems that it’s quite obvious that intel chips will be used. Expect the bare specs though, this is an education machine not a power house. Now you’ll have your whole summer to wait for it!

UK to pay about the same for Wii as US, Japan

Well it’s been a bad old few weeks for Sony – first they announced their $600 price tag for the PS3 stateside, they then ruffled a few european feathers by announcing they would have to pay 499/599euros and then they positively took a dump on us here in the UK and told us we would have to pay £425 ($800!!). Not surprisingly UK PS3 fans have not been overly thrilled with the news. And now sony’s good chums microsoft and nintendo have decided to rub some salt into the wounds. First Microsoft releases major updates to it’s XBOX (see bellow) making it look darn good value for money when compared to the PS3, and now nintendo have announced that not only will their console be a mere $250 but they are not going to be charging us extra over here in good ol’ blightey – meaning we at Widgx will be bringing home a shiney new Wii for £150 as soon as they are released!

Microsoft announces major 360 Dashboard update

Well thanks to the good people at Joystiq details and pics of the forthcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard update are now available. The biggest news, as widely expected, is background downloading, which includes a six slot queue system. Downloads will pause while you play online to minimize lag, but otherwise will run in the background while you go about your Dashboard business. Other improvements include a boot to Dashboard function, improved media playback and controls, full USB keyboard support, and an improved Marketplace layout. The update will be available to Xbox Live users “in about a week,” and will be eventually be available bundled with retail game discs for those without an Internet enabled 360. If you ask us it is always great to see a manufacturer offering continued development and improvements to existing customers – sony are you listening?
HTC Hermes will be launced on o2

We got some news on the HTC Hermes today – the replacement for the highly popular HTC wizard. o2 have confirmed that they will carry the phone and it will be known as the XDA Trion. Not content with simply branding the handset o2 have also surprised us and decided to go with a 400MHz processor from Samsung instead of the 300 MHz processor mentioned by other operators and distributors! Samsung’s 400 MHz processor is approximately the same speed as Intel Xscale 520 MHz. Read on for the full specs (more…)
Most Expensive Telephone Number 1.5million Pounds

The world’s most expensive phone number was auctioned for charity yesterday in Qatar.
The number, 666 6666, sold for 10m Qatari riyals or £1.5m.
The previous record holder was Chinese number 8888 8888, which sold for £270,000. The Cantonese word for eight sounds very similar to the word for rich. It was bought by Sichuan Airlines.
The auction started at a million riyals and interest quickly narrowed from eight bidders to just two, according to Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA).
The auction was organised by national telco Qtel, which has run two previous auctions and plans to run another in September. More details here. We tried phoning Qtel for more details, but they’d all gone home because it was 6pm…
Having seven sixes as your mobile number might seem devilish to some, but interpretations vary. A brief dip into the weird world of numerology shows 666 is seen as holy in Judaism because it represents six directions – up, down, north, south, east and west. Others equate it with the Arabic word “ellah” meaning God, as in a Greek God not ‘allah’.
On a techy note, the first Apple Computer sold for $666.66, the sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is w – so www. shows how evil the internet is. And finally, Viagra has a molecular weight of 666.7g/mol.
