MacBook Pro

Apple today unveiled the new flagship of the MacBook Pro line, a 17-inch, 1680×1050, 2.16GHz Core Duo model. The new model comes standard with 1GB of RAM, an 8X dual-layer burner and a 120GB 5400 RPM hard drive, along with a FireWire 800 port, for $2,799. Maximum RAM is 2GB, and Apple also offers a 100GB 7200 RPM drive as an option.

At the same time, Apple has removed the 17-inch PowerBook G4 from its lineup, leaving the 12-incher as the sole remaining option for customers willing to settle for last year’s model (or who want a smaller-footprint portable). The launch was timed to coincide with the opening of the National Association of Broadcasters conference, which begins today.

What do you do when you’re a little late to the party, and still want to make sure you catch a bit of buzz? If you’re Samsung, you don’t just announce that your Q35 is a Core Duo laptop; after all, other companies have been announcing their Core Duo rigs for months. You declare it the “world’s smallest” Core Duo box, and trumpet the fact that it weighs about 4 pounds, has a 12-inch widescreen display, and still manages to pack in a T2700 processor, 512MB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive. There’s also a DVD burner, WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet and Firewire. And, of course, since Samsung laptops aren’t sold in the US, we assume that within a few days we’ll hear an announcement from someone else for the “world’s smallest Core Duo laptop that you can actually buy.”

New iBooks out in Spring?

Posted in Laptops by K Saleh on the January 28th, 2006

“It seems to be more conjecture than anything, but AppleInsider has some rumoring from “people familiar with the company’s plans” that say Apple is planning a Front Row equipped “iBook” this spring. No word yet if the new iBooks will borrow any naming conventions from their MacBook Pro brethren, but the supposed 13-inch laptops will be borrowing just about everything else, including Front Row, the Apple Remote, a built-in iSight camera, and the Yonah chipset; though they assume the new laptops will be limited to the 1.67GHz Core Solo processors. They’re also saying the new consumer oriented laptops will retain a single Firewire 400 port and stay close to their current white-clad design, though supposedly Apple has been toying around with the idea of a black version, but no one has sighted such a version yet. Again, doesn’t seem like much more than some reasonable conjecturing, though the iSight and Front Row abilities sound like nice additions for laptops that are supposed to hit a sub-$1000 starting price point.”

“The United Nations has thrown its weight behind a project to place a $100, hand-cranked laptop computer in the hands of millions of schoolchildren around the globe.”

So isn’t it great that you can now challenge them to a game of Counter-Strike on your 10Ghz, 6GB RAM, 512mb 3D Graphics card? Well maybe not, but at least they’ll be able to have some of the luxuries we take so much for granted. Well done UN.
