Photo Frames are for girls - yeah? Well not any more my masculine gadget friends thanks to the Magnetic Levitation Photo Frame. This allows you to have a picture frame suspended in mid-air using a magnetic field to suspend pretty much any metallic object as long as it’s not too heavy - which is going to look cool on anyones desk. Imagine the envy of your work colleagues while you sit there spinning your suspended photos around with just a little touch. The levitation device costs £70 and the photo frame £14.99.

Posted in Miscellaneous by T Evans on the June 19th, 2006

GadgetCentre were lucky enough to take the MediaMan HVX-3500 out for a spin and kindly gave us their views. On the whole they seemed highly satisifed.

The MediaMan is basically just a housing for a 3.5” hard drive that can play back tons of video and audio formats: “MPEG-1 (AVI, MPG); MPEG-2 (AVI, VOB), ISO, IFO; MPEG-4 (AVI, DivX 3.11, 4.xx, 5.xx. XviD) DivX subtitle (SRT, SMI, Embedded Multiple Subtitle) and Audio - WAV, MP3, MPEG-4(AAC), WMA, OGG Vorbis, AC3, DTS.” That’s a lot. (more…)

Apple clashes with movie studios

Posted in Miscellaneous by T Evans on the June 19th, 2006

Word has it that Steve Jobs is currently engaged in rather heated debate with the major movie studios. It all surrounds sorting out the pricing of offering movies for download via iTunes. In line with his 99cents per song, $9.99 per album and $1.99 per TV episode steve jobs is fighting to bring us movies for a flat fee of $9.99 per download. But surprise surprise the movie studios want more and a more complex varried pricing structure depending on the popularity and date of release of the film. The movie studios want to see the download fees ranging from $9.99 up to $19.99. The movie companies recive 70% of these fees. Rumour is that apple looks closest to giving in but we will wait and see. We hope this isn’t true especially seeing as you can buy the DVD for barely anymore than $19.99!

Available in black or white, the dock is compatible only with iPods, however a line-in input permits connection to other digital music players. Each speaker delivers 7.5 watts of sonic punch and the subwoofer provides an additional 15 watts. These are going to set you back around £130.

PageFlakes: Your Desktop on the Web

Posted in Miscellaneous by K Saleh on the May 14th, 2006

Pageflakes.gif

We all see that the scramble for your web attention is at all time high. Companies like Yahoo, Microsoft, and Google are buying anything that they think a user might like and incorporating it into their own networks.

However it seems that simplicity is the answer in most cases. Hello PageFlakes. Upon stumbling across this site I noticed that it has a nice clean layout and offered you a vast array of customizable options and all without the support of ads.
I used to try out Microsoft’s ‘Live’ service and it was pretty good, but it’s a fact that they’ll be throwing ads here and there like there’s no tomorrow once it’s final.
PageFlakes also has the added advantage of tabs. So that means you can have a bunch of windows as not worry about space.
A few suggestions that do come to my mind are, perhaps a browser within a browser? It’s gimmicky but it would be nice to show it off. I also like the way that the info pops out on Live.com more than on PageFlakes, and the final topper is that when Live.com’s weather is minimized, it shows a thin summary, whereas PageFlakes simply shows an icon.
Of course their biggest flaw is that they don’t have WIDGX on their feed list *winks*, but who knows? This might evolve into something that’s amazing.
