It’s been just over 24 hours since Apple unveiled the 2nd Generation iPod nano, and the first unboxing shots are starting to trickle in. AppleInsider captured some super close-up images of a green model — they even exposed some tiny flaws in the metal — and sat it down for a powwow next to a 1G nano and a podgy 4G iPod. A Flickr user named Justin Williams also photographed the unboxing of his latest splurge, this time in the shadow of his monolithic Cinema Display — and we thought Apple-heads were subtle types. Click on for a shot of Justin’s blue box, or take your pick of the Read links for more second-gen nano pr0n.

As if the Apple rumor mill wasn’t peppy enough on the off days, things are really getting moving now that their Worldwide Developers Conference is mere weeks away. Some flavor of Mac Pro seems a shoo-in, but Think Secret has some dirt on the iTunes Music Store and iPod nano, which they think are due for some keynote love as well. Read on to find out

On the iTunes front, the word is that Steve Jobs will announce movie rentals for the store, with titles coming from Walt Disney, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros. — with more on the way. While a significant move, this marks a bit of a defeat for Jobs, who was purportedly going for mirroring music model with a-la-carte movie purchases, instead of having the file expire after a specific time or number of viewings. We’re not sure which rental method Apple will go for, but the movie industry types seem pretty smug about their victory in the matter. As for the iPod, Think Secret’s insiders are reporting that the second-gen nano is on the way, which should come in 6-8GB capacities, and feature multiple colors, including that metal alloy enclosure we were hearing about. Otherwise, the new nano shouldn’t be much of a departure from the current offering. Rumblings of 40GB and 80GB 5G iPods are also making the rounds, with that 6G being delayed into 2007, but Think Secret doesn’t expect anything for the WWDC.

Thank heavens, another portable media player for us to pick apart. The successor to last year’s V43, the T43 is a PMP that does what all good PMPs do: play your torrented videos and MP3s without making too much of a fuss. For the most part, it’s pretty similar to last year’s V43, but when was the last you expected consumer electronics companies to innovate?

The T43 has a few things going for it that make it something more than just a hard drive with a headphone jack. It can tune into DMB broadcasts, all but useless in the US, but given Digital Cube’s location (South Korea), it makes sense. It even uses GPS in some capacity, by the looks of it, navigation. The 4.3″ 480 x 272 pixel resolution screen will show off all the MPEGs and Xvids (among other formats) you feed its 20 or 30GB hard drive. It runs on Linux, no doubt winning it brownie points in the OSS community. If and when it makes its way out of Korea is unknown just yet, as well as for how much. But that information’s boring anyway.

Available in either 1GB ($139), 2GB ($159), or 4GB ($220) versions – the Meizu Mini Player is capable of all the usual assortment of MP3, WMA, WAV, and OGG audio file playback. However it also plays AVI movies on its 2.4-inch QVGA screen as well. Also included are an FM tuner, voice recorder, calendar, stopwatch, USB On The Go support, and a couple of games, which is a lot more features than the nano offers and for less wonga, so it looks like Apple has reason to be mighty worried come July or early August when the first shipments of these arrive. The first few reviews of these things are starting to appear and so far they have all been possitive and of the general conclusion that it is indeed better than an ipod. The only downside found to date has been that the video playback is only 16 fps – but it’s good enough for movies on the go.

Not only is this little beauty small and perfectly formed it packs some nifty features in to. It can record live TV without the need for a computer. Leading to the claim from it’s manufactures that the device promises to “change the way we watch tv forever”. Well we are not toatly convinced by that – I for one still plan to use my eyes. But it’s a pretty impressive feature nontheless. It also uses the efficient MPEG4 codec – which is a good thing as the only memory available comes in the form of SD cards.
The RoverTV is available in two configurations, a $300 “Big Screen” model and a $350 “Wide Screen” model. Both are identical save for the screen size, with the “Big Screen” featuring a 3.5″ (320 x 240 pixel resolution) screen and the “Wide Screen” featuring a 4″ (480 x 272 pixel resolution) screen. The battery life is generous, offering 12 hours of playback when listening to audio and six hours when viewing video. It is available now from online retailers, so what are you waiting for.

Japanese manufacturer Twinbird, who seems to have a thing for gadgets in the bathroom, has introduced another product we’re sure someone has been clamoring for, although we can’t imagine who. Their Xzabady (or X Zabady, perhaps) is a waterproof frame for an MP3 player or other portable audio device that’s designed, naturally, for use in the bathroom. The frame, available in either white or black, packs a single rear speaker with two “reflectors” and a built-in FM tuner, which can be used on its own without an MP3 player attached. You can also customize the frame by inserting your our picture. Well, you could if you could actually buy it — this one looks to be Japan-only for now.

So it’s not enough that each company feels they have their own vandetta against Apple and the iPod. So it appears as if 2006 is going to be the time where there is a whole army against Apple.
Who can blame the people for being confused when it comes to trying to be unique and getting the most for their money? Enough blabber, more details.

(information brought to you from mp3newsire.net)

Toshiba Gigabeat S

The Gigabeat S is a Windows Portable Media Center unit that comes with 30GB (model S30) and 60GB (model S60V) capacity. The unit sports a 2.4″ QVGA color screen, an FM tuner, and supports MP3 as well as the latest versions of Microsoft’s DRM-laden audio and video codecs. The Gigabeat S claims a 20 hour battery time for audio and a 5 hour duration for video. The Toshiba can be hooked up to a Tivo or an XBox 360 for those so inclined.

The Toshiba Gigabeat S30 weighs in at 4.4 ounces in a 2.3″ x 3.9″ x 0.5″ case. The Gigabeat S60V is slightly larger holding 5 ounces in a 2.3″ x 3.9″ x 0.6″ body. The Gibabeat S also comes in three colors; white, red and black

Samsung SBH-300 Bluetooth

Rumors that Apple is planning to release a bluetooth iPod sometime in the near future have been flying around for several months now. The problem with Apple rumors is that since there are so many of them it is hard to validate the accurate ones against the myriad that are just acts of wishful thinking by fans. Sometimes, though, you can look to what the competition is producing to get a hint a what technology is viable now and therefore a compelling bet for Apple.

The Samsung SBH-300 is a DAP with Bluetooth for wireless headphone activity. The SBH-300 is a 2GB flash unit that sports a 262k color OLED LCD display, voice recording, FM tuner, and A2DP stereo Bluetooth, which allows the unit to function with Samsung’s Anycall SBH-100 earphones. Samsung also says that the unit can function as a Bluetooth stereo headset for handling calls linked to Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.

Sony NW-A1200 with 8GB

A few weeks back Sony SVP Takao Yuhura announced an upcoming iPod killer and a new service to replace its fading Connect music download site. Unfortunately, Yuhura gave no details as to how or why this Sony player would be any different? Could this unit be it?

8GB of flash memory would certainly gives this unit a foot up from the iPod nano and would be the key compelling draw for higher end users. Unfortunately, this player turned out to be a hard drive unit, so it is less compelling. The unit is also the first Sony to use the AAC format over Sony’s own ATRAC3 codec. This doesn’t mean the player can handle tracks purchased by iTunes as those files, while AAC, have Apple’s DRM to contend with.

NEC VoTol

The NEC VoTol, short for a moderately pretentious moniker they label Visual On-demand Tool of Life, is modestly notable for the fact that an English to Japanese translator is packaged into the thing.

A PMP unit, the VoTol is capable of handling MPEG 2 and 4 video and DivX. On the audio side, the VoTol adds Ogg Vorbis and ACC (not Apple’s proprietary version, but you probably already knew that) to the commonly used MP3 and WMA formats.

The NEC VoTol holds 30GB in a 1.8″ drive, has an SD port for added memory and transfers, and sports a 2.7-inch 320 x 240 LCD. And that water graphic on the screen shot? It’s a fancy battery level indicator (points for flair). The VoTol shipped last March for $340.

Sandisk Sansa e200 Series

SanDisk has now released its 200 series players. Announced in January, these iPod nano competitors offer up to 6GB of memory, trumping the nano’s 4GB top end. The unit’s 3.5″ x 1.7″ x 0.5″ dimensions compares well with the iPod nano’s 3.5 x 1.6 x 0.27 figure, though the Sansa is twice as thick.

The e200 series offers some compelling features. This includes a removable battery – a must as we found out recently – built in voice recording, an FM tuner and a MicroSD slot to expand the memory further. The unit also has photo and video playback capability, the latter feature being a curious addition for the small 1.8-inch TFT display. As we get closer to summer another Samsung DAP has arrived. Samsung’s persistance clearly sends a message that the iPod may be king now, but we’ll chip away year after year. Of course, the iPod had to go ahead and gain even more market share the last six months, so Sam sung has to reverse that trend first. But hey, it was Samsung who designed and built Creative’s first MP3 player, the original Nomad, in 1999 so these guys know what they are doing.

So let’s get to the details. The Samsung YP-U2X is a 512MB player with a 4-line LCD display, voice recording, FM tuner, and a reported 13 hour bateery life. The unit measures 24.4 x 87.6 x 12.6mm and handles WMA / ASF / WAV audio along with MP3. The unit is already available through Best Buy’s site for a very reasonable $70. The 1GB U2Z version of this portable and the 2GB U2Q are expected to hit US shores before early summer.

Viliv P1

The Viliv P1 PMP is the latest contender coming from Asia. Yes, the Viliv is sold in the US and making its entry last March.

The Viliv P1 offers the widescreen abilities missing on the Apple with a 4″ 480 x 272 pixel color TFT display, and comes with 30GB of storage and a CF slot for file transfers. The Viliv P1 also sports an FM tuner and DivX and Xvid support. The unit’s battery will run 6 hours on video and 11 hours when pushing audio only.

Ok so this is hardly a earth shattering move forward in technological terms and nor is it an idea no body has come-up with before. Yes this is another portable MP3 player – but just look at it, this is one sexy MP3 player. With looks good enough to make an ipod blush – this is one device that is sure to draw admiring looks. It shares more than a slight resemblance to the LG Chocolate mobile phone. It also cleverly manages to pack in a few features that the ipod doesn’t, among them, FM radio, voice & line in recording, and WMA & OGG support. So if you were just about to order that nano then maybe it’s time for a rethink. Available in models ranging from 512 MB to 2 GB, although there is no word yet on pricing.
